Former Dockers Star Set to Lead Subiaco at the Nicky Winmar Cup Carnival

Monday, February 11, 2019 - 3:57 PM

Former Fremantle FC superstar and Nollamara AFC legend Des Headland is set to take on the head coaching role for Subiaco District’s Northern Night Fields program and Nicky Winmar Cup team. For the next 6 weeks Des will pass on his experience to local aboriginal youths at the new Northern Night Fields Program, and then lead the Subiaco NWC team on Saturday March 23rd at David Grays Arena (Peel Thunder FC) in this year’s Aboriginal AFL Super Carnival.

The Subiaco District has teamed up with the WA Police Force and local schools to deliver the Northern Night Fields Program to Indigenous boys and girls aged 13-17 years. The program will run Tuesday nights between 4.30pm and 6.00pm at Barry Britton reserve with support from Balga JFC through President Gary Forrester and Nollamara AFC through Des Headland. The program looks to engage local indigenous youths in AFL and provide an opportunity for participants to be selected for the Nicky WInmar and Kirby Bentley Cup teams which will represent Subiaco District at the carnival.

District Development Officer Matt Debarro Had this to say, “We are so excited to have a role model and football legend such as Des heading our program and team. With his AFL experience, community status and strong Aboriginal heritage he is the perfect candidate to not only lead the Subiaco team at the carnival, but help engage as many local aboriginal youths in the program to assist us in providing not only an opportunity to learn and have fun playing a bit of footy, but also provide a place where participants can engage with their local community in a positive way.”

The Kirby Bentley team will be coached by another highly regarded role model in the local community, head of Girrawheen SHS Girl’s Academy Sam Eaton. Sam coached the Subiaco team at last year’s KBC cup and had huge success in the number of girl’s who participated, as well as on field success. Sam will work alongside Des Headland to deliver the team’s training sessions at the Northern Night fields program for the next 6 weeks.

Matt Debarro commented, “I am stoked to have Sam back again, the work she did with Adam Cockie in previous years was fantastic and I hope to assist Sam in building on that success. With what is truly a superstar coaching team assembled for this program and upcoming carnival, I am looking forward to the next 2 months of football.”

Training sessions are hosted each Friday afternoon in the leadup to the carnival.
